After Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts visited the Rustenburg Waste Tyre Depot, REDISA warned that the country’s waste tyre system is a ticking time bomb.
It points to the 2023 fire at the Biesiesvlei depot and widespread safety failures as signs of deeper governance problems, and says the focus has moved to storing tyres instead of recycling them.
